The way we live our lives online is rapidly changing. Artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality and innovations such as blockchain – a kind of digital record for transactions — are set to transform the online world, affecting everything from social media to how people and businesses make money from their creativity.

If you’re feeling confused by the pace of change, here’s what you need to know about five trends on the cusp of making a major impact.

1. Generative AI

AI and the more specific field of machine learning (where software improves at a task with experience) are already used to personalise the recommendations we get when we shop online, in digital assistants like Alexa and for automated translation of text. The uses for this technology are only likely to grow. There are some innovative uses of AI by businesses that may point to how people will be using the technology in future.

The AI-powered chatbot ChatGPT is a high-profile example. Microsoft recently invested US$10 billion (£8.2 billion) investment in the chatbot’s parent company showing how seriously these online tools are being taken.

It was seen by some journalists as the start of an “AI war” between Microsoft and Google. The latter company has been incorporating AI into its search engine to improve the answers people get. Jasper.ai is another forward-thinking use of AI. This online service generates written content for blogs, social media posts and letters.

Meanwhile, Meta, the company that owns Facebook, is working on AI-powered software that can generate video from a text prompt, such as “teddy bear painting a portrait”. This is regarded as the next step on from online tools that generate images from text, such as DALL-E and Stable Diffusion.

2. The metaverse

The “metaverse” is intended to make the online world more like the real one, through the use of virtual reality (VR) headsets. Instead of interacting with a two-dimensional profile on social media, you would don your VR headset to be represented by an avatar in a 3D virtual world. Your avatar would be able to communicate with other ones in a space modelled on the real world. Online shops could take the form of 3D virtual spaces so customers could browse in much the same way they would in their everyday lives.

A new wave of advanced VR headsets could help facilitate the metaverse. These could include advanced features such as eye tracking — which can make interactions with 3D worlds more instant and realistic — and facial expression detection, which would ensure 3D avatars replicate their users’ demeanours. Apple and Qualcomm are developing new VR headsets that could launch in 2023, but details of their features are being kept under wraps.

YouTube and Meta are both building libraries of 360-degree video and images, as well as computer-generated objects and backgrounds that can be used to build the 3D environments that your avatar would explore in these virtual worlds.

3. Digital certificates

The owners of 360-degree video and computer-generated landscapes designed for use in the metaverse will want to sell their digital creations. To prevent unauthorised use, a kind of token called an NFT can provide these items of digital content with certificates of authenticity and ownership.

These non-fungible tokens allow the content to be bought and sold with confidence, something that’s increasingly happening with the use of cryptocurrency. In 2022, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter all introduced NFTs to their user and advertiser bases. Visa and Mastercard have also made buying NFTs possible with their credit and debit cards.

Despite a recent drop in the NFT market, forecasts by the US stock exchange Nasdaq suggest the tokens could perform well in 2023.

4. Blockchain

A kind of digital record, or ledger, called a blockchain could help underpin private networks of people online, providing a safe space for them free from trolls, stalkers and fraud. Permission to view information can be restricted to a small number of people and the record of activity provided by blockchain can’t be changed. This means any unauthorised activity on the network is instantly traceable.

And because information is stored across a network of computers rather than a single server, it is more difficult to hack. An example of an emerging type of online community that could make use of blockchain is a DAO (decentralised autonomous organisation). These networks have discarded the top-down management used elsewhere in favour of a more democratic form of governance with no central authority.

A social platform called Mastodon shares many aspects with DAOs. It was recently in the news when more than a million users fled Twitter to the platform in the wake of Elon Musk’s takeover.

5. ‘Workfluencers’

Businesses have taken note of the rise of social media influencers and are adopting their approach to reach target audiences. They are making use of what’s called an employee advocate, or “workfluencer”. Companies have realised that employees’ social media profiles and posts may better convey the brand than corporate accounts.

When crafted thoughtfully, social media posts by employees can seem significantly more authentic to other users than corporate PR. People have grown more honest about day-to-day work life, rather than only producing stories on professional milestones and achievements.

Organisations are likely to build procedures to encourage teams and employees to communicate and distribute material on the company’s behalf.

Why are smaller cities hiring influencers? https://qrius.com/why-are-smaller-cities-hiring-influencers/?Why+are+smaller+cities+hiring+influencers%3F&RSS&RSS+Reader https://qrius.com/why-are-smaller-cities-hiring-influencers/#respond Fri, 10 Feb 2023 16:12:38 +0000 https://qrius.com/?p=260393 Nehal El-Hadi, The Conversation and Daniel Merino, The Conversation

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the demographics of cities shifted. As stay-at-home orders, remote work and bubbling reduced social interaction, and restaurants, venues and arts destinations shut down temporarily, people considered leaving big cities.

And as public health restrictions were lifted, the cost of living increased. Smaller urban centres saw this moment as an opportunity to capitalize on the desire for a higher quality of life and a more “authentic” existence. Smaller and mid-sized cities in North America invested in strategies to attract new residents.

In this episode of The Conversation Weekly podcast, we spoke with two urban theorists about why people were leaving larger cities for smaller ones, how authenticity was marketed using social media influencers, and why smaller and mid-sized cities are underrated.

Avi Friedman is a professor of architecture at McGill University in Montréal, Canada who has looked at demographic trends in small and mid-sized cities in Canada. He explains that smaller cities need to recruit new residents in order to collect taxes.

“It all has to boil down to economics,” Friedman explains. “They need taxpayers — it is a major issue in making the city work. When there is a negative migration and people moving away, it usually puts at risk the funds of these communities, meaning that there is no sources of income.”

David A. Banks is a lecturer in the Department of Geography and Planning at the University at Albany, State University of New York, United States, and the author of The City Authentic, which will be published in April. He describes authenticity as essential to small cities’ survival, as they apply it to themselves to attract new residents looking for an escape from larger cities.

The city authentic, Banks describes “encourages people to think of the city as a place to be authentically you and to get away from these pre-packaged, commodified notions of how to live your life.”

It’s meant to appeal to younger residents, who may want to relocate for a better quality of life, and maybe own property and start a family, further rooting in the community.

“People who live in small towns know their neighbours. They meet either in community clubs and in a church. It is a different type of relations that create another aspect of what it means to live in nice places,” says Friedman.

But there’s a downside to this. When smaller cities successfully recruit new residents, it can have a negative impact on the older ones. Banks says that “what it did do is make everything unaffordable, literally like triple or quadruple digit percentage increases” in the cost of living.

But it appears the trend of leaving large cities to move to smaller ones is reversing. For people to stay, smaller cities need to invest more in amenities and infrastructure to support the population growth.

The Internet beyond social media: there’s lots to do https://qrius.com/the-internet-beyond-social-media-theres-lots-to-do/?The+Internet+beyond+social+media%3A+there%E2%80%99s+lots+to+do&RSS&RSS+Reader https://qrius.com/the-internet-beyond-social-media-theres-lots-to-do/#respond Fri, 06 Jan 2023 14:09:35 +0000 https://qrius.com/?p=259384 Most smartphone owners have developed the habit of instinctively opening social media apps on their phones at the slightest hint of boredom. You might pick up your phone to check a single notification or an email, but before you know it, you have wasted another 30 minutes scrolling on social media.

However, the Internet actually has a lot more to offer. Yes, it may be quite fun to watch hilarious videos and DM them to your friends, but you can actually use the Internet for so much more.

Gaming

One of the most popular ways to use the Internet is to play games online. Video games continue to get more popular by the day and maintain their grip as one of the biggest forms of entertainment in the world. Another form of gaming, online casinos, are seeing a surge of growth with lots of competition, so the top sites offer a wide range of titles across different games such as slots, blackjack and roulette, as well as promotions such as the casino offers from Betfair Casino that can include free spins among other things. Alongside this, sites make use of the latest technological developments, with live casinos being a recent example of this.

Podcasts

There is also now a bigger market for podcasts. So now, instead of watching endless videos, you can listen to informational, educational, or entertaining podcasts. Due to the growing market of this medium, you can now find podcasts on pretty much any topic you are interested in. Remember to check different platforms, as not all host the same podcasts. If you are enterprising enough, you could even use this guide by Buzzsprout to learn how to make your own podcast.

Learning

In fact, why stop at podcasts? Whilst podcasts can be the perfect way to start learning about something new, there is a whole world of resources to delve into whatever interests you the most. It is not surprising that the idea of the Internet originated from the need to share information. Now that almost everyone has access to the Internet, it has become an ocean of information. So, if there is any skill you want to learn, like cooking or repairing, or if you want to know The Guardian’s best tips to learn a new language, you can now do this through the Internet.

With all of these many possibilities within your reach, it might be difficult to hold on to every thought and get all your tasks done. The Internet is also a good place to organise your life. You can use an app like Notion, which some people call the second brain as well. By using such an app, you can organise so many aspects of your life in a single place: work, school, household, finances, and so on. Best of all, with the Internet, you can access your second brain on any device.

The Internet is not just a source of fun but is also a magnificent repository full of information and knowledge. While social media is an important tool for many that takes up a lot of our time, it is indeed good to know that we can use the Internet for a lot of other things as well. The list is endless.

Is LinkedIn taking over from Instagram as influencer territory? https://qrius.com/is-linkedin-taking-over-from-instagram-as-influencer-territory/?Is+LinkedIn+taking+over+from+Instagram+as+influencer+territory%3F&RSS&RSS+Reader https://qrius.com/is-linkedin-taking-over-from-instagram-as-influencer-territory/#respond Fri, 23 Dec 2022 11:10:16 +0000 https://qrius.com/?p=259007 Theo Tzanidis, University of the West of Scotland

When someone says social media, you probably don’t immediately think of LinkedIn. But there’s no denying that the business networking site has gone the distance: it is now 20 years since it was founded in Silicon Valley.

It was the brainchild of Reid Hoffman, a US entrepreneur who worked on an early social media platform for Apple before launching one of his own in 1997. SocialNet was a dating and professional connections site, but folded two years later after failing to find a big enough userbase in those early days of the web.

Hoffman went on to become a senior manager at PayPal, and made a substantial amount of money when it was bought by eBay in 2002. This helped him to co-found LinkedIn on December 28 2002 with a team of former SocialNet colleagues, becoming its first chief executive and later executive chairman.

This was a period when everyone was realising the importance of individual interconnection and peer-to-peer interactions. LinkedIn launched in May 2003, just ahead of Myspace and Facebook. But where they and others like Friendster went after the consumer market, Hoffman’s venture was always focused on business.

How it grew

LinkedIn was originally set up as a place where users could share their CVs and establish a network of people who could recommend them. It took a while for the service to find its feet via innovations like allowing users to upload their contacts books (2004), as well as jobs listings (2005) and public profiles (2006).

LinkedIn went international in the late 2000s, opening an office first in the UK in 2008 and introducing Spanish and French language versions the same year. Jeff Weiner, formerly of Yahoo, took over as chief executive the following year as the company morphed into a proper business.

It made money from premium features that enable users to do things like messaging outside their network, send promotional emails and access analytics. It also sells advertising space and packages to help recruiters attract talent.

It floated on the stock market in 2011 with a valuation of US$9 billion. This helped to finance an acquisition spree that has gradually bolted new features onto the platform, such as posting articles (2015) and videos (2017).

The company was acquired by Microsoft in 2016 for US$26 billion (£21 billion). With Hoffman joining the Seattle giant’s board the following year and Weiner still LinkedIn’s chief executive today, Microsoft has taken a relatively hands-off approach to ownership.

Pandemic benefits

Today LinkedIn is arguably the seventh largest social network after Facebook/Messenger, YouTube, WhatsApp, Instagram, Twitter and Tik Tok. In 2021 it had nearly 824 million users across 200 countries and territories, of which 6% (49 million) are premium subscribers, paying a minimum of US$29.99 a month.

Not only does LinkedIn’s business focus attract an upmarket userbase, they are also youthful. The majority (59%) is made up of 25-34s, followed by 18-24s (20%) and 35-54s (18%). It generated revenues of over $10 billion in 2021.

World’s biggest social networks

LinkedIn had a “good” pandemic, with conversations on the platform rising 43% and content-sharing almost 30%. It benefited from a shift in how people networked, related to findings from numerous studies that it’s the “weak links” in our professional networks who are the most important for gleaning critical information that leads us into jobs we genuinely desire.

At a time when the usual barriers of time and space were less relevant and Zoom calls were ubiquitous, it became the perfect moment for reconnecting with these occasional contacts. Especially with so many people questioning their work situations, LinkedIn was the ideal place to see their posts and reach out to them.

This meant that LinkedIn played a key role in the great resignation, particularly since like the platform, this movement was dominated by millennials. Users posting about changing or quitting jobs would attract large numbers of likes and comments, inspiring others to do likewise. The fact that so many people were connected on LinkedIn multiplied the effects, making it both the main catalyst and the main solution for employers.

Meet the ‘work-fluencer’

LinkedIn’s role as a lightning rod for work issues is also likely to determine how it develops, as a new category of social media influencer emerges – the “work-fluencer”. Companies are increasingly finding that employees’ LinkedIn profiles and postings can express the brand better than corporate accounts, allowing them to develop the corporate business network much more quickly and naturallyand naturally.

When this is done well, employee posts are usually much more authentic than corporate PR. Rather than just curating articles on professional milestones and triumphs, people have become more open and honest about day-to-day work life.

Over 13 million LinkedIn members have their profile set to “creator mode” to obtain higher exposure for their postings. Many use the hashtag #careertiktok to publish things like their wages and day-in-the-life vlogs about their professions, achieving over 1.5 billion views.

This new “online watercooler” represents a change in the amount of information people reveal about their work on the internet. Workers are raising formerly taboo concerns like pay transparency, discrimination and professional undermining. Some professionals like lawyers, entrepreneurs and HR experts, have leveraged their posts into new content-marketing businesses and other profitable side hustles.

Twenty years after LinkedIn was founded, this could enable the platform to enjoy the kind of trust and community growth that other social media networks would envy. Certainly it has challenges – fake accounts are an issue, for example. And LinkedIn inevitably attracts a lot of spam, which is probably one reason it doesn’t achieve the same amount of daily interactions as other social media.

On the other hand, it benefits from not having a single direct competitor of scale. The nearest big ones would be Facebook Groups or Reddit, but LinkedIn’s purely corporate focus is always likely to be a plus against such players. At a time when traditional platforms like Facebook and Twitter are experiencing difficulties, LinkedIn has a real opportunity to continue succeeding as the one dedicated platform of its size.

Twitter users want Elon Musk to go, but what do they want from his replacement? https://qrius.com/twitter-users-want-elon-musk-to-go-but-what-do-they-want-from-his-replacement/?Twitter+users+want+Elon+Musk+to+go%2C+but+what+do+they+want+from+his+replacement%3F&RSS&RSS+Reader https://qrius.com/twitter-users-want-elon-musk-to-go-but-what-do-they-want-from-his-replacement/#respond Thu, 22 Dec 2022 20:51:03 +0000 https://qrius.com/?p=258993 Stefan Stern, City, University of London

In a strong response to a recent Twitter poll posted by Elon Musk, users of the platform have called for him to relinquish his position as CEO. Musk has responded that he’ll step down when he “finds someone foolish enough” to take over as CEO, saying he will run the software and server teams instead. But any replacement will need to be able to steer Twitter back to calmer waters, with Musk remaining majority owner.

It’s been a tumultuous year for Twitter and Musk. He began building up shares in the company in January 2022 and his US$44 billion (£36 billion) bid to buy the platform was accepted in April. He then tried to pull out of the deal in July, before finally taking ownership in October. Since then he has made – and sometimes walked back – numerous changes to the popular social media platform.

Indeed, Musk’s reaction to finally getting his hands on Twitter has been reminiscent of Christmas morning, when children rip open presents, display initial excitement and then quickly lose interest. Musk may have imagined that owning the website would be fun and make him feel powerful.

But the reality has been rather different. He has been criticised and abused, both online and in real life and now 57.5% of more than 17.5 million Twitter users have voted for him to stand down as its CEO.

Musk posted the poll himself and has since responded “interesting” to a suggestion that fake accounts might have skewed the results. He also agreed that only paid subscribers should be able to vote on future Twitter policy changes.

There has been some speculation that Musk has come under pressure from other Twitter shareholders and lenders to move on. Further, Musk has been selling billions in Tesla stock and its share price is down by over 60% this year. Shareholders in the car firm would probably like their hitherto successful CEO back full time.

So, if Twitter wants to find a new CEO, what sort of person should the troubled social media platform be looking for? As a student of leadership, I can see three key requirements for anyone considering – or being considered for – this role right now:

1. Confidence and independence

A new Twitter CEO will want assurances that they will be free to take decisions about the direction of the business without being second-guessed by Musk as the majority owner. So the new CEO will need to be confident, perhaps even arrogant, and ready to stand their ground.

2. The ability to face facts

The new leader will have to “confront the brutal facts” of the situation – according to management expert Jim Collins, this is how to begin productive change. Twitter is struggling financially.

Musk paid US$44 billion to buy it, perhaps twice what it was worth. He has borrowed huge sums and sold large tranches of Tesla stock to help fund the acquisition. But he could now face interest payments to lenders of up to US$1 billion a year unless Twitter’s financial health can be turned around. These are the brutal facts a new leader must confront.

3. An imaginative approach to management

The social media platform’s current position leads on to a third requirement for the new leader: imagination. Twitter is a resounding practical success. It is influential and powerful. It has certainly sped up the flow of information (admittedly, inaccurate information as well as the useful kind).

And it can be a force for good – for example providing data and advice during the COVID-19 pandemic or helping to highlight the failings of politicians or the media – even with the unpleasantness and abuse that seem to be an unavoidable part of tweeting.

But is it really a commercial proposition? It is not a platform like Facebook or Instagram that can deliver billions of users to potential advertisers. Indeed, many prominent advertisers left the site apparently in response to Musk’s chaotic decision making.

Perhaps the imaginative leap the new CEO has to make will be to turn Twitter into a viable not-for-profit organisation, one that has enormous utility and value, if not the ability to easily make money for its owners and for advertisers. In this case, a core task for the new CEO will be to recognise what sort of business Twitter is, and decide whether it is really a conventional for-profit business at all.

Sticking with the plan

And this leads us to a major task for any future Twitter CEO – and perhaps the heart of the problem with Twitter. Musk changes his mind frequently – sometimes within hours, as we saw recently when he appeared to walk back a policy change regarding users’ ability to link to other social media accounts. He may rethink stepping down, or even appoint someone only to sack them.

This brings us to a very valuable leadership lesson that the maverick Musk has taught everyone in recent months: we should hesitate before labelling forceful people as great leaders in any setting until we have seen what their long-term impact has been.

The love and hate for Andrew Tate… https://qrius.com/the-love-and-hate-for-andrew-tate/?The+love+and+hate+for+Andrew+Tate%26%238230%3B&RSS&RSS+Reader https://qrius.com/the-love-and-hate-for-andrew-tate/#respond Fri, 28 Oct 2022 14:06:38 +0000 https://qrius.com/?p=257684 Robert Lawson, Birmingham City University

An online search of “how to be a man” leads to nearly 130 million hits and over 12 million videos. Many of these promise hacks or some “big secret” to attain the pinnacle of masculinity. Spend enough time looking through this content and you will inevitably encounter Andrew Tate.

Apparently the most Googled public figure in 2022, Tate was removed from a range of platforms in August due to claims he promoted extreme misogynistic views. Tate is also accused of being at the vanguard of radicalising young men and endorsing male supremacy, with parents and educators concerned about his influence on young men and their views on masculinity.

US-born Tate was raised in the UK and competed as a kickboxer before appearing on Big Brother in 2016. After a video surfaced of Tate hitting a woman with a belt, producers removed him from the show on the grounds of domestic abuse. Tate refutes this version of events, saying the activities filmed were consensual and that he was removed for the safety of the other housemates.

Like many reality television stars, Tate then found social media fame. Promoting a jet-set lifestyle – fast cars, private planes, expensive cigars and attractive women – Tate advocates a traditional form of masculinity that exploits notions of the male protector, provider and patriarch, and values conspicuous consumption.

He has gone on record to say that women are like children, a man’s property, a liability, corrupted by sex, lazy and stupid. He has claimed that men become weak and uncompetitive if they live with women, that depression isn’t real, and that success is defined by how much power one has over other people. He has also been accused of being homophobic and racist.

In August 2022, Tate was banned from Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and YouTube. Tate has since denied being misogynistic, saying he was simply playing a comedic character and that his views were deliberately misconstrued, misinterpreted, or taken out of context. This it-was-just-a-joke defence is a tried and tested method of deflecting criticism and defending misogyny. Linguist Bethan Benwell has studied the use of irony in men’s lifestyle magazines, finding that it allows speakers to espouse controversial views without taking responsibility.

But it’s difficult to square Tate’s explanations for his behaviour with what he actually says. A cursory review of almost any of his content highlights an incredibly worrying mindset where gender is concerned, in some cases openly promoting coercive control and domestic abuse.

King of the manosphere

Tate has become a leading voice of the manosphere, a digital space where men talk about “men’s issues” like fitness and health, dating, relationships, finances, divorce, fathers’ rights, and more. While these are important topics to offer help and support on, the manosphere is also a space where anti-women and anti-feminist ideologies have taken root, bolstered by a belief in the inherent superiority of men.

Shifting gender relations and changing familial and domestic patterns have led more young men to feel what sociologist Michael Kimmel calls “aggrieved entitlement” – a state of anger and fear that they are losing their social status and privilege.

In my own research, I have found that aggrieved entitlement goes hand in hand with men presenting themselves as victims of a global assault on masculinity. My analysis of manosphere spaces on Reddit, for example, shows that men think they are emasculated, disposable, disrespected, discarded or even totally forgotten. It is easy to see, then, how Tate’s message becomes a call to reclaim “lost” masculinity and reassert masculine authority over others.

Many worry that Tate’s audience is being indoctrinated into an extremist and dangerous form of masculinity. As journalist Caitlin Cooper points out:

Tate is not empowering young men, he is radicalising them. Young men are learning that, if they express emotion they are weak, if they do not have girlfriends they are failures, and if they do not receive female subservience they are not adequately reaping the benefits of manhood.

For some young men and boys, resisting this siren call, wrapped up as it is in a discourse of self-improvement and led by a cult-of-personality figure like Tate, can be a struggle. Through social media, Tate’s beliefs have become part of mainstream discourse, and countering these views is not straightforward. Tate peddles a beguiling image of male dominance and all the (supposed) benefits and advantages such a thing affords.

What can be done

A number of organisations have developed resources to help parents, teachers and other adults to talk to young men showing signs of potential radicalisation. The charity Hope not Hate has published advice on how to combat radicalisation in schools, while the Challenging Male Supremacy project and the Institute for Research on Male Supremacism has a range of resources about the dangers of male supremacism. Educators, teachers, parents and friends need to challenge male supremacist views when they hear them and offer positive models of behaviour for young men to aspire to.

Social media platforms also need to do much more to counteract the dissemination of problematic views advocated by Tate and others like him. YouTube, for example, still hosts countless videos of Tate, and it’s not difficult to find other examples on TikTok and Twitter. Of most concern is how new content is curated for viewers. Watch one video and inevitably similar content will be promoted to a user’s front page. Because I had to watch Tate’s interviews and podcasts to write this article, the YouTube and Facebook algorithms are now actively pushing more of his videos to my account.

Some might decry social media intervention as censorship or “cancel culture”, but there is evidence to suggest that deplatforming hate speech is an effective countermeasure against its viral spread.

For those of us who study misogyny and sexism, there is always a concern that we are drawing attention to the more insidious elements of online discussions that would be better off left untouched. But if we want to understand how Tate and the manosphere fit into our society, engaging with his content is a necessary evil. And maybe if we as academics do it, then the general public won’t have to.
